On the sixth day, God created a creature that would be known by many people just because of his name. This creature, known as the aardvark, has become somewhat famous through his front-page location on dictionaries and encyclopedias. But, his unnatural looks, eating habits and digging abilities also make him stand out from among other creatures.aardvark5

This aardvark, which kind of resembles a pig, has an unusually long nose that ends with two nostrils. These nostrils have an incredible sense of smell which the aardvark puts to good use by finding its next meal.

In order to capture his food, the aardvark must use his long tongue, which is covered in gooey, gross saliva. This tongue, which can be a whole foot long, is used to scoop up ants and termites. To get to these termites, the aardvark must locate the nest, smash through it with his massive claws and start licking up the escaping ants.

However, sometimes the aardvark can’t get his tongue far enough so he digs his way in. When this happens, little flaps of skin cover up his nostrils and his ears turn backwards. This blocks any dirt or bugs crawling up into the two most vulnerable parts of an aardvark. With help of such tools, aardvarks are known to eat over 50,000 bugs each day!

aardvark55Even though hundreds of those bugs bite him each day, he is protected by his remarkably thick skin which covers his whole body. This makes the aardvark a sort of ugly, wrinkly creature, but it keeps him safe.

Although the aardvark is most known for his insect-tastes, he also eats a very crucial fruit item. This fruit, called the aardvark cucumber, is named after the aardvark itself and is thought to be the only reason aardvarks have a certain kind of teeth. All other insect-eating animals lack these teeth so the aardvark is a mystery.

Anyway, this aardvark cucumber cannot germinate his seeds to make more cucumbers so he has to have an animal dig him out, eat him and then bury his seeds in the form of waste. Fortunately, the aardvark does all of those and the aardvark cucumber is able to endure.

All aardvarks live underground in burrows that can be up to 43 feet long and have entrances large enough for a full-grown man to enter. Their front legs are great for digging and they can burrow a three-foot tunnel in less than five minutes. Imagine if you could dig that fast!Aardvark_Walking

With his oversized ears, which can be moved independently, the aardvark can pick up the slightest hint of danger from far away. If faced by a predator, the aardvark’s first response is to run or hide, but if he has no other choice, he will fight by flipping on his back and striking with his claws.

In a world full of God’s amazing designs, a mammal like the aardvark comes as little surprise. Although it is truly stunning and a master of digging and eating, his design is only one of many in a world created for human exploration.
