When most people think of the numbers “666” they immediately think of the Devil, the Antichrist, Satan etc. But what does “666” really mean? Well, there is only one real verse (and the surrounding verses) we have to study to find out, Revelation 13:18.
Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
The Greek word for “Six hundred threescore and six” is “chi xi stigma”. The translation is exactly how it is said in the Bible but what is interesting about that Greek phrase is the word “stigma” which means “a mark incised or punched (for recognition of ownership)” (Strong’s Greek Dictionary).
Now this word “stigma” is used in Galatians 6:17 when Paul, in his usual bond servant manner, says “From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks (stigma) of the Lord Jesus.” (parentheses mine).
So, what does this “stigma” in the use of “666” mean. Well, considering that Paul used it in a way to say that he is marked as a bond servant to Jesus Christ then it may be used the same way as the name of the Antichrist.
Thus, with that description from Paul, we can safely assume that the title as a number (Revelation 13:17) means that “666” claims the Antichrist as a “bond servant” to Satan! Antichrist has pledged his life to Satan, and his eternity thus bearing his “stigma” or proof of ownership.
