As one can tell by the name of this creature, Dinofelis was a “terrible cat”. So, how terrible was the terrible cat? Terrible enough according to our finds. What made it so terrible? Only one way to find out.

Dinofelis has long been compared to a jaguar. With amazing strength, agility and speed the jaguar could very well represent Dinofelis in the modern world. Although he only stood at two feet four inches, this creature had all the marks of being a skilled and terrifying hunter.

Now, the modern jaguar is an amazing hunter. But, even he could not match up with the longer front legs of Dinofelis. With longer front legs it was easier to take down larger prey or just prey in general. There were many benefits.

Since research of Dinofelis‘ bones are showing him to be a less than sufficient runner, scientists now believe Dinofelis ambushed his prey. His front legs’ power reinforce this idea since he could have used them to catch his prey and pull it down and then hold it down as it made the kill. Very well designed!

Although Dinofelis has fangs that are much longer than modern cats, he was not a true sabre-toothed cat. His teeth were less flat and shaped more like a cone, just like today’s cats. however, the teeth are still a great advantage for Dinofelis.

As we said above, when Dinofelis held down his prey he would most likely strike for the throat as that will kill the animal quickly. Anyway, when Dinofelis held down his prey he would have a much easier way of hitting the neck with his protruding teeth than with the shorter teeth of today.

Legs, body and teeth and all make Dinofelis a terribly frightening enemy for any animal that caught his fancy. I am glad God made him though and made sure we found his bones. I know I enjoyed learning more about him!
