I saw a post on FaceBook the other day that said something like this:
When you carry the Bible . . . the devil gets a headache.
When you open it . . . he collapses.
When he sees you reading it . . . he faints.
When he sees you living it . . . he flees.
And just when you’re about to re-post this by hitting “Share” he will try to discourage you.
I just defeated him. “Share” this if you’re in God’s Army.
First off, this post is not seeking to spread the Word, it is what is called an “engagement post”. It is a way to rank higher in FaceBook standing because it encourages people to share it even though it does not have any real value. This post is simply made to drive traffic, not spread any kind of truth. That is relevant when you look at what is being said.
Here is the thing, the devil is not omnipresent. He cannot be everywhere at once. In fact, he cannot even be two places at once. Therefore, if he can only put his attention to one person who is fighting for God in this world, you are going to have to do a lot more than open your Bible, read it and share a post. The devil has bigger things to worry about. If you are the focus of the devil’s energy then you are doing something right, but it takes a lot to get his focus. You know, you basically have to be Job, or Adam, or Paul. You have to be seriously threatening him to get him to focus on you.
Now, if you wanted to switch the word “devil” for “demons” in this post, that would be more accurate but really only at the point of “when he sees you living it . . . he flees.” That is when it really matters. You could read the Bible, carry the Bible and open the Bible all day long but that won’t mean anything until you start living it.
I think we way underestimate who our enemy is. We think of Satan and his demons as characters in an animated movie. We see them as cartoons. Little creatures with red, pointy tails and pitchforks. This is so wrong. The Bible says in 1 Peter 5:8 that Satan is a “roaring lion, seeking whom he can devour.” A roaring lion is nothing like the image we have for Satan in our minds.
In the end, stop thinking shares on a lukewarm post on FaceBook is going to advance the kingdom of God. Teach people the truth. Live the Word of God. Get Satan’s attention. You will know when you get it.
