microphoneBack when dc Talk was the original band, you could have called them our family’s national band. Even until this day, probably every one of us could sing “Jesus Freak” or “Mind’s Eyes” (I’m not saying anything dogmatically good or bad about dc Talk, just that we listened to them a lot).

However, since then, TobyMac has left that band and moved on. Frankly, his move hasn’t been the greatest for the Christian music world.

Everybody everybody in the place to be
Open up your mind and let your soul be free
I can feel the Most High shining on me, so….
Let’s get this party started

Everybody everybody in the place to be
Open up your mind and let your soul be free
I can feel the Most High shining on we, come on….
Let’s get this party started

Blind sided by the blitz
Come on baby it’s on
I couldn’t wait to get on this
You ain’t no quiet storm
I’m gonna tell it like it is
There ain’t no stopping us now
Somebody shut me up so I can live out loud

(CHORUS)

Them people thought we was gone
It’s been a long time comin’
But straight out the box
We got the dark side runnin’
So Father, Most High won’t You show Yourself
And shine on this record like nobody else

The name of this song immediately set off a bad note, but the lyrics only made it worse. First off, an “open mind” is as dangerous or more dangerous to oneself than a open house door is in the middle of the night.

What person in their right mind (no pun intended) would keep their house doors open all night. That is similar to putting a lighted neon sign outside your door begging cats, dogs, rodents, bugs, humans, etc. to come into your house!

In the same way, why does TobyMac tell Christians to open their minds? And what about letting our soul be free? Jesus is the only One who can set us free. If we were to “set our soul free” as TobyMac says, we would be much the same as opening our mind.

I have the feeling that a lot of TobyMac’s songs are following the cultural Christianity route, but I want to keep my reviews on one song per artist. We’ll see what happens.
